Planning to apply for American colleges is an extensive and can be quite complicated process for Vietnamese students and for other international students in general. Think American high school students have an easier way? Not necessarily. For American parents and students, college is also big investment, both financially and timely. Therefore, they take their time to research and prepare to find the best fit school. Here is the timeline that top U.S. college counselors recommend for their students.

9th grade: first year of high school for U.S education system. At this stage, the students are encouraged to focus on their academic performance and getting involved in extracurricular activities.

10th grade:

  • While students still focus on their high school experiences, they will also take Practice SAT (PSAT)

  • Parents will have an info session with college counselors

  • Students attend college night: a night that the high school organizes give students and families an opportunity to speak directly with those involved in higher education. These events help students and families get answers to their questions, establish beneficial relationships, and explore the many options they have available to them.

  • Course registration to prepare for college

  • Pre- ACT before the school year ends

11th grade:

  • Parents encourage their children to do College visits (as many as possible)

  • The students attend college night specifically designed for 11th grade

  • College rep visits at the high school

  • Practice College interview (optional)

  • Individual meetings with College counselors to set a list of colleges to apply

  • Taking the real SAT/ACT

12th grade:

  • Senior College night

  • Essay writing workshops in English classes

  • More college rep visits at high school

  • On-going meeting with college counselors to review essays, applications and other documents.

These 3 years consists of lots of activities, which Vietnamese students who wish to study abroad also do: test prep, essay writing etc… Some by themelves and some with the help of education consultant companies. However, the activities that VNM don’t have a chance to do is to create relationships with the college recruiters & visiting colleges. Not just in Vietnam, creating relationship is crucial in America as well. It helps the college recruiters remember the longer, especially for your top-choice schools and see you as a person, not just the numbers of grades and test scores to represent you.

Visiting college is also crucial. Reading and seeing the pictures on the Internet about a college can be deceiving because every college tries to sell their best images. Many students enroll into colleges based on their online research and turn out to be unhappy with their choices. College visits can give the students the real feel of how it is like to be a college student and to see if they belong to the culture of the school. With college visits, students can sit in a class, see how the dorms look like, where they can eat on campus…

VNM students now have a chance to prepare & strengthen their applications for American college just like American students with Talent Acceleration Program (TAP). TAP is a summer program designed ideally for high school students who are looking to study abroad in the U.S for college. With 2 weeks in North Carolina and Washington D.C, students will gain unbiased understanding of U.S college system and an in-depth connection with college admissions officers. TAP is also a great program to let the students gain & practice their soft skills of communications, making friends and team work through a series of non-traditional classesand activities. By the end of two weeks, the student will come back to Vietnam to be more mature, independent and most importantly, form their own knowledge of what type of U.S colleges will fit them the most.

What sets TAP different from other summer program:

  • Receive “guaranteed” conditional admissions to three New Mind’s partner universities/ colleges: University of North Carolina Greensboro or West Carolina University or Wake Technical College

  • Connect with a former Duke University’s Admissions Director to receive tips and insights into the American college application process

  • Explore: American colleges campuses of various types, including public, private, liberal arts, or community, within the two different beautiful states of North Carolina and Washington D.C

  • Live on the campus of the largest public university in North Carolina, North Carolina State University.

  • Immerse yourself in American culture to gain an authentic view of life here. There will be many fun activities, some which include: sightseeing in D.C., thrilling roller coaster parks, visiting famous North Carolina beaches and endless shopping.

  • Enjoy your summer break as a part of this safe, well-designed program while having a great time learning about American culture!

Timeline of the program: July 4- July 17
