I. University of Delaware Background Information

The University of Delaware is a public institution that was founded in 1743 and has a great tradition of excellence. It is one of the oldest universities in the U.S. – three of its first 10 students went on to sign the Declaration of Independence.

UD offers more than 145 majors, 126 master’s programs and 61 doctoral programs. The most popular majors at UD include Business, Management, Marketing, Social Sciences, Engineering; Health Professions and Related Programs and Education. Some of its top ranked areas include Physiotherapy and Chemical Engineering.

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifies UD as a research university with very high research activity



II. Location

The University of  Delaware is located in Newark, Delaware, a small town on the East Coast of the US. Considered an East Coast Classic, UD is conveniently located in the hub of several major East Coast cities such as New York City and Washington D.C. It is just about an hour by car from the historic city of  Philadelphia

  • Tax-free shopping: Delaware is very popular on the East Coast of the United States due to the fact that there is no sales tax on the purchase of goods and services.
  • Business-friendly: Delaware is considered a “banking center” in the United States and is home to over half of the 500 largest corporations in the country!
  • Main Street: The campus surrounds Main Street, the center of  Newark’s commercial, student and community life. III. Students at UD 

The UD student body encompasses more than 18,000 undergraduates, more than 3,700 graduate students and more than 700 students in professional and continuing studies from across the country and around the globe.

About 4,000 international students from more than 95 countries are studying at the University of Delaware.
The student-faculty ratio at the University of  Delaware is 15:1, and the school has 31.7% of its classes with fewer than 20 students

IV. Distinguished Faculty

UD’s distinguished faculty includes internationally known authors, scientists and artists, among them a Nobel Laureate, Guggenheim and Fulbright fellows, and members of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.


V. Quality

In 2015, UD received the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

In addition, UD was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities.

The University of  Delaware is also one of five universities and colleges in the nation to receive NAFSA’s 2015 Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization, in recognition of excellence in integrating international education across all aspects of the campus 


VI. Conditional admission to UD

Students are not required to have TOEFL or IELTS when they apply to the ELI and for conditional admission to UD. They can complete the admission requirements as follows:

  • High school transcripts
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Essays and Personal Statements 
  • Talents and Involvement

Students will need to provide their test scores (SAT/ACT and TOEFL/IELTS) for direct admission to UD.
